Well, the hubby and I were going on and on since last week about looking forward to a challenge, and we didn’t really expect one last night, until we found out we were playing subs instead of our scheduled opponents.

The subs were a 3.0 F and 3.5 M, which put them officially one level up from the both of us.

So I was a bit nervous at the start of the first game, but calmed down knowing that Jason and I had warmed up for 45 minutes prior and that had gone quite well. So we did our thing.

Final score 6-2, 6-1. The first two weeks of the league, it was a bit difficult feeling proud of our performance because our opponents did not seem like they were a good match. But last night, we definitely had a challenge with well matched opponents, and we proved to ourselves that it was definitely our skills that was winning matches, not just luck of a lower ranked opponent.

On the final day of our vacation, when we had planned to sleep in a bit after just having returned from Coronado Island in CA, my hubby awoke at 7:15, checked the scores on his Droid, and woke me up with a bit of a panicked “Federer is down 2 set” and ran off to the couch.

We watched in disbelief, wondering if Federer was going to be ousted in the first round. Of course, he started coming back and bageled his opponent in the fifth set. We’d like to think it was because his two biggest fans got up especially to watch him.

On a sad note, my draws on TourneyTopia are already pretty screwed. Why, Cilic, why?

Last night was my first singles game, as the first week was my bye week (and let me tell you, there was lots of cussing when I found out last Tuesday that I had a bye when I was all geared up to kick butt).

Anywho, my first opponent was playing her second match. Ever. Very sweet gal, but it was a game full of moonballs and slow movement to each shot. I won somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-2 (or 3), 6-1. I lost the few games that I did because I started working on my serving placement, which resulted in a lot of double faults. But I really didn’t have anything to lose, and I feel a bit guilty about bageling new league players.

This week we wore coordinating team uniforms, or for the girly translation – we wore cute matching outfits, to show our team unity. Red team power translated to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over our opponents, but to be fair, this is their first time at competitive doubles play. After the two sets, we were still feeling plenty of energy, so we played a short set by ourselves, and as usual, he kicked my butt.

Last night was the first match for my husband and I in mixed doubles, and it was great to kick off the season with a win of 6-2, 6-4.

I attribute our win to some strategic practice Sunday evening with some intense net drills which paid off as I made my first successful poach and an overhead or two. I also found my short cross court serve return which is near impossible for the server to anticipate, and Jason found his killer serve and implemented it at crunch time. Definitely a positive way to start off the season.

There’s nothing I love more than shopping on Ebay for those last season items that I can’t find in my size on the clearance racks at the local tennis shops. Although I would have preferred the yellow set, the red will do – anything to change up my tennis wardrobe from the black on black look I have been sporting for the past several seasons.

Adidas Response Court Skort and Tank Set

This bright combo should be here next week. If I can my hubby to wear his red shirt and white shorts, we’ll really look like a coordinated mixed doubles team this season!
